Numbers, time and dates

Getallen, de klok en de datum

Learn to say numbers, the time and dates in Dutch. You will see why half drie means 2.30, and how to say prices and your date of birth.

Explanation

Numbers are everywhere

Appointment times, phone numbers, addresses, prices, dates of birth… Numbers come up in daily life and in every part of the exam. In the listening exam, understanding a time or a price correctly is often the answer to the question.

Two things about Dutch numbers are different from many languages: from 21 on, you say the units first, then the tens (eenentwintig = one-and-twenty), and in clock times half is said in relation to the next hour. In this topic you will learn these step by step.

Basic numbers

Learn 1–12 and the tens by heart; the other numbers are made from these. 13–19 end in -tien. Tens that are not in the table: 60 zestig, 70 zeventig, 90 negentig.
